Review

This is an incredibly well-researched, informative, and accessible resource for parents challenged by selective eating. Broccoli Boot Camp is a must read, whether your child is a picky eater or demonstrates more significant issues.--David Celiberti, Ph.D., BCBA-D, Association for Science in Autism TreatmentFeeding their children is perhaps the most basic job assigned to parents but also one that can be the most challenging. The consequences of inadequate nutrition multiply quickly and the ways determined children can defy parental efforts to promote good eating habits are many and maddening. Although billed as a book for parents, and it is truly an invaluable resource for them, it is also a tremendous resource for the professionals who serve them.--Patrick C. Friman, Ph.D., ABPP, Vice President of Behavioral Health, Boys Town Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, UNMCForget kid-friendly menus or hiding vegetables in cake. This book offers techniques that can actually help a child to enjoy eating greens for their own sake and to develop into an adult with a varied palate. For any parent struggling to feed a picky child, this book is a treasure trove of useful, evidence-based information and advice. I wish I'd had it when my own children were toddlers. I found wisdom on every page. Keith Williams and Laura Seiverling understand that every family is different but they also understand what works and what doesn't, when it comes to learning new tastes. Most new parents know that multiple taste exposures are the key, but the difficult part is getting a child who is scared of new foods to experience those multiple taste exposures. There is no magic bullet, but Broccoli Boot Camp draws on the authors' extensive clinical knowledge to show how to create positive and patient methods for tasting new foods that work for you and your child. With their mantra that 'liking comes later', family mealtimes can stop being a battle.--Bee Wilson, author of First Bite: How We Learn to Eat (Basic Books)The book is brimming with good advice and stories about children who struggle with selective eating issues and their families. The authors' wisdom, depth of knowledge, and experience is evident in their sensible recommendations.--Claire Wurtzel, learning disability specialist, and co-educational director of the Hidden Sparks ProgramBroccoli Boot Camp is the comprehensive guide for the treatment of severe selective eating. Detailed and precise, yet accessible and interesting, it empowers parents to fundamentally change the health trajectory of their child's life. --Sabrina Freeman, Ph.D., author of The Complete Guide to Autism Treatments, Science for Sale in the Autism Wars, and Teach Me Language, and parent of a child with selective eating

From the Inside Flap

BROCCOLI BOOT CAMP is a comprehensive guide for parents of children who are selective or "picky" eaters, and can be used with children with or without special needs (e.g, autism or Down syndrome). It presents commonsense behavioral interventions to successfully expand children's diet variety and preferences for healthy foods. The book starts with the simple premise that when children are encouraged to taste and consume tiny portions of new foods, repeatedly and with lessening resistance, they learn to accept and enjoy the foods as part of their regular diets. Real-life, compelling case studies and abundant research findings support the authors' advice on how to overcome a child's selective eating. The book describes ways to increase compliance, factors to consider when choosing an intervention, and strategies to shape behavior. Finally, five intervention plans are presented with step-by-step procedures, modifications, and tips on maximizing success. Parents can choose the intervention which works best for their family's circumstances. The book also contains forms to track data, incentives, and meals, and a behavior contract to use with older children. BROCCOLI BOOT CAMP gives parents the tools they need to promote healthy eating for their child as well as improve the family mealtime experience!

I am a parent of a four year old with ASD who is a very selective eater. I just finished reading Broccoli Boot Camp and I’m very excited to try one of the interventions described with my child. (I will update this review after I try it.) I found the book very well written, well organized and clear. Reading it out loud to my husband helped to get him on board to attempt an intervention with our son (he was resistant at first, assuming our son will just grow out of his selective eating—the book notes that research does not support this assumption). It’s pretty clear that following through and implementing one of these interventions is going to be VERY challenging. I’m giving myself a couple weeks to be fully prepared. I’ll hopefully update my review to five stars and have good news to report!

I just finished reading Broccoli Boot Camp and would recommend this book to parents of picky eaters. It has a simple formula to follow and helps parent/child find ways to decrease the stress and learn to enjoy more foods with less struggle. As a Registered nurse, this book will be on the top of my list to refer and give parents. It is very important to help parents/children find ways to increase their nutrition and energy levels. The book is clear and gives you a step-by-step plan. I feel it would be very helpful to parents and any professionals who work with children struggling with mealtime.

Just completed reading the book and have to say it’s a must read for any new therapist as well as anyone else who is attempting to treat pediatric feeding disorders. All treatment recommendations in this book are research based and it’s easy to administer. It’s an easy read and it left me with a handful of important questions and details that I should always be asking when dealing a child with food refusal. I’m recommending this to all my colleagues in the field of speech language pathology and behavioral services who have feeding goals to address on their caseload.

This book is fantastic and offers multiple solutions to feeding challenges. It is helpful to parents and caretakers of varying levels of feeding issues in children. I highly recommend!

As a behavior analyst specializing in the treatment of pediatric feeding disorders, I’m often in search of cohesive guidelines to provide families to help them along the way. This book is an excellent and valuable resource for parents and caregivers, as well as clinicians and other professionals working with this population!!

As a speech pathologist who specializes in treating children with feeding disorders, I have found Broccoli Boot Camp an invaluable resource not only for myself but also for the parents of the children I am treating.

If you are a Parent, Caretaker, Clinician, or have an interest in learning about selective eating, then look no further! Broccoli Boot Camp offers lots of strategies and step by step plan to implement during difficult meal time challenges. A very resourceful book and I definitely recommend.
