The Nevada Northern Railway saw the end of commercial duty in 1983 with the closure of the copper pits and smelters that left the railroad with no purpose. By the 1980's however, there was a general awarness that railroads and artifacts must be preseverved. The entire line and facilities were donated to the coommunity and with community involvement, the railroad has been preserved and is being restored by volunteers, donations, and grants. Author Mark Bassett is the Excecutive Director of the museum and does a wonderful job of publicizing and writing about the Nevada Northern Railway. This Aracada "Images of Rail" book is no exception. It tells the history of the railroad through extensive captions to pictures. My wife lived in Ely during the early 1980's and had a relative that worked for the NNRY until the end. This railroad has a personal touch for us. The only fault is the lack of detail maps. There is one general high-level map at the beginning for the book but that's it. It would be informative to have detail maps of the southern end around the mining area of Ely, McGill, and Ruth, as well as the Western Pacific and Southern Pacific interchanges at Shafter and Cobre. A map showing the entire railroad showing what has been restored and what hasn't plus pictures of both would be informative. More maps would have received five stars.

The Nevada Northern Railway is now a functioning tourist railway in Ely Nevada. I appreciated learning the complete history of the railroad after taking the excursion on the train. I also toured the railroad shops in Ely which is still using original equipment from the 1900's.
I personally have never read this book. I have no desire to learn about trains and the like. My husband on the other hand is a train NUT! He has read this book over and over and over and over and over! He loves it!I do like the pictures :)
As with all Arcadia Books there are more picutres than text. This is the only current book out on the NNRy and many of the pictures have never been in print before. The text gives you a short history of the railroad and a look at the copper mining in White Pine County Nevada.

Mark is the greatest Railroader I have ever met. We took the tour at Ely with him, it was unforgetable. This book is a must have.
I was first made aware of the Nevada Northern years ago when I asked my Mom to order two VHS tapes from a commercial I had seen on TV. In the summer of 2009, I got my chance to visit Ely as part of the National Railway Historical Society's annual RailCamp. I was not disappointed to see how much of the railroad was preserved and still standing, as if time itself had forgotten this little community in Nevada. It was only a few years later that I bought the book, which brought back a flood of memories that I'm not likely to forget anytime soon.
