This book is designed for the folk such as myself who have some knowledge in the English field already (I’m talking about a degree not passive interest). I don’t say this to be rude: I say this because if you didn’t major in the subject you will definitely need other resources (E-Z quickbooks for CSET subtest I, sparkcharts on writing/terminology for subtest III, -this book should help you pass II and IV though, more than enough knowledge!). Sure, you don’t have to have majored in it to teach English, but it sure does help when you’re studying time periods, genres, and devices. With that being said, even if you DID major in English, you should prepare to use additional resources to brush up on material you are not familiar with. In particular with CSET subtest III because what is provided in this book is definitely not enough to pass that section of the test (trust me, I’d know, I failed that one the first time around-used additional rescources and passed). As previously mentioned subset II and IV are thoroughly covered, thus, other resources are not required this book nails is to the T with those two sections. Subtest I is modestly covered, however they are missing key authors, and if you’re like me, an individual who desires thorough knowledge, you will need the competitors CSET English book to fill in the gaps this one is missing. All in all, however it is a good book. I wouldn’t say it was the reason I passed 100%, but if you’re looking to use this along with other materials, you should be solid! Good luck to you!
I’m really glad that I didn’t use this as my sole guide to prepping for the CSET. I read the reviews and it seems as if the newer reviews fit my experience, which means that the test questions and format aren’t what they used to be, especially for Subtest 1. The book focuses a lot on literary periods, characteristics, some terms, devices etc. However, NONE of that was especially helpful. The actual test was heavy on literary analysis and had a lot of contemporary authors and newer ideas that aren’t even listed in the book. I wasted a lot of time memorizing eras and important authors from each one, movements within the eras etc etc which the book seemed to stress. I did pass the test, but I know that relying solely on this book would have brought about a different outcome.
This turned out to be a great purchase. I wasn't sure what to expect from the CSET, so based on the previous reviews I bought this study guide. It's all I used. Basically, it has long chapters on each of the test sections, with many of the terms that you'll need to know. I took a sample test, then read through each of the chapters twice, and then took the second sample test. The tests are very similar to what you'll experience during the actual CSET. I just got back my results for sections I and II (the multiple choice sections) and passed them with flying colors. I'm hoping for the same with the writing sections, but at least I knew what to expect based on this study guide.
Great for subtests 1, 2, and 4. The chapter for subtest 3 needed additional information. Overall, this book is great for reviewing (or learning) the necessary material. However, you may need to find additional resources if you didn't major in English.
This proved to be a good resource and study aid before I took the CSET English. Each chapter has clear and concise information. There are two full length practice tests, with explanations of answers for the multiple choice sections (subtest I and II) as well as sample constructed responses with analysis. The first full length test however pulls directly questions from the proceeding chapters examples. While this was helpful in familiarizing myself with the test structure and question types, the questions at times seemed to require me to recall rather than apply. As well, I did notice that the sample test questions were very similar to those that can be found for free on CTC website. There are so few sample tests and practice tests available online, and those that I did find had very similar, if not the same, questions for subtest I and II. Overall though, a great resource that served me well. I completed both practice tests in this book, reviewed the answers, and reviewed the main points in early chapters before taking the actual CSET. I passed in the first sitting, and found many of the practice questions in this text very similar to those that I faced on the actual CSET exam (especially for subtest I and II).
A great outline for studying for the English CSET -- the author also gives lists of resources to supplement the information. I have taken and passed two of the four subtests so far and have found this guide to be helpful.
I have been picking away at this book and it is certainly helping me with preparing for the English CSET. I'm planning to take the first test in a few months, but this has me feeling fairly confident about the test. It is a very helpful, insightful, and extensive book and I recommend it to those who are planning to take the CSET in the future.
I was able to pass all 4 exams in one sitting with the help of this book. I studied every concept, so it's only helpful if you have about 1-2 months ahead of time to study.
