Amazon.com Review

The 1990s have witnessed a sort of renaissance in cave art, thanks to new discoveries from the south of France. Previously, the oldest examples of human art were thought to have been painted 15,000 years ago. When these three spelunkers-turned-authors happened upon the Chauvet cave (named after one of them), however, they visited an underground art gallery that had been closed for 30,000 years. It's still inaccessible today, except to specialists. But this wonderful book of pictures and text allows virtual tourists to appreciate the creations of our remotest ancestors. This may be primitive art in the literal sense of the term, but it's remarkably sophisticated.

From Library Journal

The prehistoric paintings recently discovered in Chauvet Cave are twice as old as the paintings of Lascaux, and show both considerable strength and beauty. The discoverers of Chauvet Cave are well known and respected speleologists who maintained impeccable records while exploring their find. It is they who tell the story of their explorations. In many ways this book is reminiscent of Carter's writings about Tutankhamen's tomb with a similar sense of awe at the millennia that had passed between the fabrication of the work and the modern discovery. The text is good, with a clean, easy-to-read translation by prehistorian Paul G. Bahn, who also provides the foreword. It is the photographs, however, that capture the real power and beauty of these paintings, bringing the humanity of their Stone Age artists close to home. Very highly recommended for any collection on art history or prehistory.?Mary Morgan Smith, Northland P.L., PittsburghCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

While a few of the notes are now out-of-date based on subsequent research, this is still the best single book on the Chauvet Cave paintings, done by those who discovered them, did the initial research, and took the initial photographs. It is filled with pictures, similar to a coffee table book, but is much more than that. If you are interested in these earliest paintings -- and I think we all should be since they are near the moment when, through art, we became humans -- this is the right way to get started.

The Chauvet Cave is an amazing find, filled with art more than 30,000 years old. Imagine doing these magnificent drawings with charcoal and raw pigments on a stone wall, and all by firelight. The photographs are beautiful. The cave is closed to the public to protect it, but you can still enjoy feel the wonder through the book. I understand France is working on a replica that will be open to the public, a very good way to share the beauty while protecting the cave. This book, as close as I'm likely to get, is a treasure. It inspires me.

Item arrived on time & as described. very pleased.

The book is wonderful! The item was decribed correctly by the seller and received very quickly. Happy with purchase, this is going to be a gift for someone!

beautiful book

Written by the experts who made the discovery, and conveying their sense of awe and danger with each step forward into the cave, the book guides you to art preserved for 30,000 years, almost twice as old as the art of the cave art at Lascaux, our earlier benchmark for the earliest known art. The art is reminiscent of Lascaux, and leads us to heady questions about the evolution of human art and creativity.I read the book in its entirety in the first hour after it arrived at my doorstep, amazed and thrilled. This is a great and an important book, and an absolute delight to read.I can only disagree with the title. Art this sophisticated is not the "Dawn of Art". It has thousands of years of antecedents, and I hope we'll be priviledged to visit some of that with such marvellous story-telling, and such respect for preserving what our ancestors created.-Jane Yett

Love reading about the cave art history.

Cave art that almost breathes. The book is fascinating. I would love to be able to actually go there, but this is almost the next best thing.
