I ordered Peterson’s Master the Catholic HS Entrance Exams 2019 for a friend’s child who could use some extra tutoring and practice. As a retired educator and bookseller, I’m well acquainted with Peterson’s reputation and quality. In fact, a different friend, who teaches in a parochial school, recommends this book each year to all of her students’ parents. Here’s what I (and she) like: The content is age-appropriate; subject matter reviews are presented logically and thoroughly with helpful tips throughout; the diagnostic and practice tests are comprehensive and provide detailed answer explanations; appendixes present vocabulary and those troublesome synonyms and antonyms so that students can quickly find what they need without having to seek this information elsewhere. Updates to the tests – including structure, content and what to expect on test day – are featured in each edition. My teacher friend says the students really appreciate the Alerts, which draw attention to numerous sorts of test traps and pitfalls that are so easy to fall into. For example, in the math tests, students will often encounter word problems that offer extraneous details/numbers. The book prompts students to carefully discern what the problem is actually asking them to solve. Likewise, problems relating to drawings and graphs are frequently structured to throw the test taker off course. The Alerts remind students to look carefully, recognizing that young persons – thinking of my friend’s child here in particular – might be inclined to rush through certain spots. The Peterson’s “Master the Catholic High School Entrance Exams 2019†book is everything you will need in order to master the HSPT and TACHS (except, of course, a few Number 2 pencils). I would expect nothing less from Peterson’s as they have a reputation for putting out fantastic products. My favorite thing about this book is how it is organized. Read the first couple of chapters; don’t just skip ahead to the exercises and practice tests or you’ll miss out on some key information.At the beginning of the book, there is an explanation of the two tests. This will help you get a feel for what is being tested if you’ve never taken them before. There is also a diagnostic test at the beginning. A lot of people will probably skip this, and I don’t see this feature in a lot of books. But this is helpful. It will help you identify what areas you might need to focus on. I feel like identifying these areas up front will help improve scores for test takers down the road.As you work through the exercises, I think you’ll find the tips and examples really help you understand the concepts that are going to be tested. The exercises in the book will make you more comfortable with the test once you take it because you’ll know what to expect. And there are three practice tests for each of the two exams (HSPT and TACHS) so you can take one, evaluate your progress, and revisit the areas you need to in order to get the best score possible before taking it again to see if you improve. I highly recommend this book!
I preordered this book so my youngest daughter could start studying right away. My daughter struggles with math so she is focusing her studies on Chapter 14 to start. This section includes a review on math learned over the past 8 years in school - so helpful. Before the exam in November, I really feel that she can prepare using only this book as her guide (and momma’s help.) There seems to be a well balanced set of sample questions. There are also diagnostic tests that’ll help my daughter understand what areas she needs to focus on when studying. From my first read, I noticed there’s a thorough review of all of the test topics that will give my daughter an inside edge on test day. The book is so organized and it’s easy to find what you need.This book was recommended to me from my friend who also has kids in Catholic school. She said it helped her son feel confident and ready to take the HSPT last year. He got into both schools of his choice. She said he’s a smart kid, but can get nervous when taking standardized tests. Who doesn’t?! For my own daughter, she needs to prepare extra and the many practice tests and exercises in this book will be a huge help for her. Even the time management aspect alone will help!Thanks for creating such a comprehensive guide! I am confident my daughter can use it to be placed accurately in her high school classes.
