After becoming disillusioned and frustrated from 7 years as an ICU RN, plus hospice and clinic service, this book restored my faith in the nobility of the "practice" of medicine, and brought me back to my vocation with fresh eyes and a renewed heart.

"The Laws OF Medicine" by Siddhartha Mukherjee (acclaimed author of "The Emperor of all Maladeries" and "The Gene") is a short, engrossing, intellectually stimulating discussion that focuses on "medicine" as an uncertain science that despite all the technological advances still needs to rely on a one on one, doctor-patient, relationship to achieve a correct diagnosis and expermental certainity... There are simply too many variables in medicine to rely totally on technology to achieve accurate results. A patient's history, behavior, environment, and family history are just a few things that are important in treating a patient's illness and in running experimental trials that give you are more perfect and correct result. Medicine, unlike physics, is an uncertain science and in order for it to continue to evolve it needs to look at all possible factors in treating patients and running important trials and not to rely solely on technology.

Mukherjee is a cleat writer - with a good sense of humor - who clearly understands medicine, and not just in the doctor / oncologist sense. He's able to back off and look at the field from the outside. This is an absolutely first-rate book, and I'd almost say a necessary read if you or a loved one is facing extensive medical care. I've been there (unfortunately), and this book absolutely hit the nail on the head.

A must read for any practitioner of medicine. It is a reminder that the art and science of medicine distilled by experience and clinical intuition cannot be replaced by flowcharts and algorithms. It also reminds us to always question what we know and to remember our own biases and perceptions influence our clinical judgement.

Interesting perspective on the status of medical research. It provides a realistic view of medicine as a science which enables one to have better expectations on treatment. Medicine is not an exact science yet many of us view it as such. However, progress is being made toward that direction. I look forward to a follow on a few years from now.

It's not quite what I expected. I guess I was looking for something more Medical then his actual experience. Good book though.

It is an amazing "little" book which provided me very useful insights in to the medical profession. The use of Bayesian statistical thinking is indeed needed as much as the attention demanded by outliers. Dr. Sidhartha Mukherjee is a very good writer and a very thoughtful professional. This book joins in my high praise for the two books about genetics and cancer.

Very disappointed. Many of the pages are displayed in such small writing it is difficult to read the music without enlarging the page considerably.This has been a waste of money as far as I am concerned.

A very nice book with lots of pieces most people would like. I purchased it for one student & now another student also wants it. It has pieces for a beginning student (approx 2 years) & it has selections for a more advanced student who can add additional notes.

Love the book! I took it to a FedEx Office Center and got it spiral bound for $5 and love it even more!!

Songs I played when I learned to play the piano 70 years ago.

Bought this for my grand daughter and it is easy to play and the songs are current and arranged nicely.

Love this book. I could sit down and play it. Some songs a little easy, but I was able to add to them. Good for intermediate pianist. I hadn’t played in over a decade and it’s been fun to come back and start playing again. Wonderful variation of songs.

For any woman who has never felt relaxed in a relationship, has never experienced a normal, healthy relationship, has continual fears that any man she's in a relationship with will eventually leave, doesn't fully trust a man despite his deep devotion to her...read what this book is about & see if it seems to "fit" you. I bet it will. I started reading this book yesterday & can't put it down.!'m 52 & I finally understand why I've never been relaxed in any love relationship, why I've never fully trusted a man, despite his very obvious devotion to me. Why when a man says he's working late, for example, I automatically jump to concluding he's not at work at all- he's with another woman- which is completely irrational, but at the time,it feels so intensely real. I have a very intense fear of abandonment due to many things that have occurred in my life. Don't hesitate to buy this book. It gives you so much insight into why you feel as you do & how to successfully change.

This book not only succinctly ties everything I have already learned in overcoming my emotional childhood wounds, but has also been extremely helpful in understanding and addressing the wound that made it difficult for me to receive love.The structure of this book makes it very helpful to work through your wounds. The self-assessment test were very helpful in identifying my own particular fear issue. Furthermore, providing the behavior triggers and behavioral reactions to my particular fear trigger was extremely helpful. Although I am already familiar with much of the information in the remainder of the book, it still helped bring clarity to dealing my own emotional wound in a more healthy manner.This book is filled with lots of practical exercises with examples to walk you through the healing process. In fact, as a whole, these exercises are more practically helpful than any other book I have read on overcoming trauma (not the only great book though: Rewire Your Brain, Daring to Trust, Learned Optimism, Willpower Instinct and Charisma Myth were also great. Each touch on key principles addressed in this particular book). The chapter on communication covered a variety of important topics, but also done in a succinct manner that makes it easy to incorporate as I open myself for Building Lasting, Loving Relationships.If you are new to the overcoming the fears and wounds of the past, this is a great book to start.If you are like me and have been working through your wounds for some time, then this book very well may bring a simplified clarity to the whole process. I can actually live the advice in this book in my life presently. I don't have to spend months trying to get a grasp of my wound. I can now live the life I am working towards. I personally got what I needed from this book, even with the needed exercises, within one day. I am glad I bought it and highly recommend it.

Thank you Michelle Skeen. I can not put this book down. I can not believe how helpful this book is. It is teaching me how to let go of my damaging ways of thinking that I have learned over the years. That thinking includes not trusting, self-loathing and self-sabotage. These hardwired feelings were destroying my relationship with my husband. A relationship I do not want to lose. I started seeking out why I could not trust. Was I right by following my intuition that he was cheating on me. That every time he did something nice there was an ulterior motive. If he didn't answer my texts or calls that gave me validity of my thoughts. Who would ever think that maybe it could have something to do with my self preservation process? And, god forbid, he might have other reasons for not answering my texts or calls. If you have any thoughts like I do, this book is a relationship saver.

Michelle Skeen has nailed emotional abandonment damage perfectly. The struggle is lifelong and she is right to point that out. For me what happened and failed to happen for me as baby, toddler and adolescent when mother was not available for support and was so manipulating makes me panic when a loved one withdraws at all for any reason and then I behave in ways I regret because they are toxic to what I want more than anything in this world...unconditional love. I have also clung to unavailable men in the vain hope that if I can be just what they want, they will love me, falling back into the failed attempts to "please mother". Thankfully, Dr. Skeen teaches us how to change our behavior patterns by accepting the feelings we cannot eliminate...without guilt or shame and then teaches us visualization techniques we can use to let them go... before we over-react. I am starting to feel stronger and better about myself in general now. I am working on something for myself!!!There is no sugar coating on this though. It hurts to let yourself feel things you used to cover up quickly with anger and distrust, but then after some tears, you hook them up to a cloud or floating leaf and let them go.Strangely enough when I look in the mirror lately, I even look prettier to myself!Well, there is so much more to it than this....but in a nutshell, it is a very honest book and the advice very practical and doable.I highly recommend this book for anyone...and there are so many of us, who suffers the primal fear of abandonment.

I learned some new things about myself reading this book, which surprised me. In reading other reviews before buying this, a few said that the book doesn't help end the fear of abandonment. In my personal experience, and in reading a few other books on relationships, you never do get over the fear of abandonment, but any help you can get and especially just being aware of the root of some of your reactions to your relationships will be helpful.

While there are now a lot of cookbooks featuring recipes for the Autoimmune Protocol (an elimination diet for those of us with autoimmune disease that removes grains, legumes, eggs, dairy, nuts, seeds, and nightshade vegetables and focuses on adding in nutrient-dense, healing food), not many of are as practical and easy to use as this one.Here are some highlights:-Almost 200 recipes that are actually things you'd make on a regular basis--like the Vibrant Healing Soup Base on p. 150, the Sweet and Savory Shepherd's Pie on p. 192, and the Island Roasted Pork on p.202.-Graphics indicating which recipes have 5 ingredients or less, take less than 30 minutes to cook, or are one-pot-All recipes compliant with the strictest phase of the Autoimmune Protocol-Recipes that take nutrient density into consideration--often a missing piece in AIP cookbooks. Try the Anti-Inflammatory Meatballs on p. 194 or the Wild Salmon with Roasted Raspberries on p. 234.-Twelve (yes, twelve!) weeks of meal plans, including those for busy folks, those incorporating one-pot dishes, and those using a minimum of ingredients.If you are looking for a practical resource for starting the Autoimmune Protocol or just eat healthier, this is the one for you!

I am hypothyroid and have been following the paleo diet for 9 months - some food sensitivities continue, so I need to try the more restrictive AIP diet. I am not the best cook, and I have felt overwhelmed grabbing recipes here and there from my few paleo cookbooks and pinterest. The meal plans are what I am most excited about. I think there is a meal plan in this cookbook for every kind of cook, including reluctant but committed cooks like me. I am planning on making the General Meal Plan #4 first (because it looks so yummy), but there are meal plans containing only one pot meals, 5 ingredient or less meals, 20 minutes or less meals, and on and on. There are so many recipes in this book that I will actually cook, that I am excited about getting started. Our family makes breakfast for our Christmas meal, and I am definitely making Bacon-wrapped Apple and Cinnamon Sausage!UPDATED 7/17/2016:This is still my favorite cookbook, although I use the Against All Grain books, too. Our favorite main dish recipes are Sweet & Savory Shepherd's Pie, Teriyaki Chicken & Fried (cauliflower) Rice, Garlic & Rosemary Crusted Pork Loin, Ham & Pineapple Pizza, Bacon Date Crusted Salmon, and Beef Pot Pie. I make double batches of some of these to freeze for lunch at work. I have liked every recipe I have tried, and I enjoy trying new recipes because I know I will probably like them. *I have to leave onion out of my recipes, and everything still tastes fantastic.

Amazing cookbook. A month ago my wife and I started AIP. This cookbook has really changed the entire way we look at food. We thought we ate clean before, but now everything is from scratch. We both feel good, we're losing weight, and our inflammatory conditions have improved. We plan our meals on Sunday with this book, go get groceries, then cook throughout the week. These recipes are really good! Family members taste the food and can't believe it has no butter, dairy, etc. You get the most bang for your buck with the slow cooker recipes. We have done a few recipes from Nourish and the ones in The Healing Kitchen are by far the easiest. You MUST have a good food processor and a good set of knives to start this diet. We're using a Ninja for blending and food processing. I've had to order some ingredients from Amazon. It is kind of a learning process to figure out what grocery stores stock what foods, but after a few weeks it gets faster. You mainly just need the vegetable aisle and the meat aisle. I can't recommend this book enough. AIP would be alot harder without this book!

A lot of cookbooks pass through my kitchen, both ones I purchase on my own and ones like this that I am provided to review for all of you. Simply because I love reading about food and seeing other people’s recipes is inspiring, I usually find something to like about all of them. But I’m at the point in my development as a cook that I don’t really need to use recipes anymore for every day dishes, so it is rare for me to find a cookbook like The Healing Kitchen that I actually want to use in the kitchen and cook from! Every recipe I tried was delicious and I suspect will become a part of my regular rotation, and I have many more bookmarked to try in the coming weeks and months. These recipes definitely pass the “taste” test, which is my number one criteria for a cookbook to stay in my collection (as much as I love them, space is limited!).So far, in addition to the brussels sprouts recipe Alaena and Sarah so generously allowed me to share with you in this post, we have made and loved the Avocado Mayo, the Mojo Pulled Chicken, the Spicy African Kale, and the Garlic Roasted Broccoli. I’m looking forward to trying the Bacon-Date Crusted Salmon, the BBQ Pulled Pork, the Rosemary and Prosciutto Stromboli, and Cherry Pie Bars – all of which I have heard fantastic things about from some of the other bloggers who got preview copies.I’m also thrilled to say that the recipes in The Healing Kitchen pass the “easy” test, which is why I’m not only excited to have this book for myself, but why I’m happily recommending it to all my readers, whether you are a kitchen newbie or an experienced cook. One of my favorite features of the recipes is that all of them include tips for storage and when relevant, reheating as well. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another cookbook that does that and it is highly appreciated, especially since eating paleo means giving up convenience foods and batch cooking and relying on leftovers helps fill that void for busy people.
